WLAN over 3G?
WLAN will be established as the dominant mobile wireless infrastructure by 2008 at the expense of 3G, according to a report from Metrinomics, a market research company from Germany. Around 90% of participants in the study believe that WLAN will be the infastructure of choice if their employers decide to deploy in-house wireless infrastructure solutions in the next five years. WLAN is perceived as being the better performer of the two technologies, and is also considered to have a better range of available services.
Research seems to be a little bit unfair to 3G. It is possible that 3G technologies will improve a lot before the year 2008 and most of the problems will be solved by then. We belive that there will be future for both tecnologies in their own segments.
Monday 14 April

Nokia to Start Making CDMA Phones in China
Nokia strengthens presence in China by merging manufacturing Joint Ventures and prepares to begin production of CDMA handsets in China. The merger represents a major milestone for Nokia in China - it demonstrates Nokia's long-term commitment to China and underscores the successful collaboration between Nokia and its Chinese partners. With Nokia's increased investment in research and development in China, the new company is well positioned to lead China's mobile handset and network markets as well as improving its competitiveness in the global market.
At the same time an american company Qualcomm is driving CDMA to Iraq, so maybe it is not so bad idea after all...
Tuesday 1 April
Every third mobile phone made in China
Mobile phones manufactured in China will account for 33 % of total world production this year, compared to 27 % in 2002. Strategy Analytics, an American research institute, forecasts that by 2008 one-half of the world's mobile phones will be made in China. Statistics published by mobile phone manufacturers show that 100 million mobile phones were manufactured in China last year and 119 million were sold there. The largest Chinese manufacturer at present is Ningbo Bird, surpassed only by Motorola and Nokia.
Monday 24 March
Phone vs. PC
In the future mobile phones will have Wi-Fi (802.11) compability. Wi-Fi has the speed that is more than enough for phone: 802.11b can transfer even 11 Mbps, so it's 100-200 times faster than GPRS. This will come to reality at the latest year 2004. Data transfer from the phone and to the phone will be soon part of our everyday lives, when phones have GPRS/EDGE, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
Mobile phone will be soon tackling from the same market shares with PC-computers. Some phones have even today so powerful prosessors (>200mhz) that they could use common PC-programs. When you add keyboard and TV- or monitor- connection with bluetooth, it has the same, or even better user friendlines than PC has. Nokia has already revealed Image Viewer to upload photos with Bluetooth connection and project them to your TV screen or video projector.
PC will always have more prosessing power, but you don't need so much power to use normal office applications, internet, e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet etc. Have you ever dreamed that you could put your PC in your pocket, it would be ready to use within 5 seconds, there would not be any noisy fans and it would cost only 200 EUR/$? Start dreaming...

MIDP 2.0 final specification is ready!
MIDP 2.0 delivers an enhanced user interface, multimedia and game functionality, greater connectivity, over-the-air (OTA) provisioning and better end-to-end security. It has great improvements:
* A Game API that provides a standard foundation for building games. The MIDP Game API includes game-specific functionality, such as sprites and tiled layers, that take advantage of native device graphics capabilities. This functionality simplifies development and provides greater control over graphics and performance.
* Audio Building Block (ABB) that is also part of the Mobile Media API (MMAPI), an optional package for MIDP 2.0. ABB enables developers to add audio such as tones, tone sequences and WAV files to MIDP applications without relying on MMAPI. On devices that also include a MMAPI implementation, developers can add more multimedia content to their MIDP applications such as video streaming.
* Support for leading connectivity standards beyond HTTP, such as HTTPS, datagram, sockets, server sockets, and serial port communication. This expanded connectivity provides a simple, standard way to integrate with existing software infrastructure that is familiar to Java developers.
* A server push model whereby MIDlets can be registered to be activated when a device receives information from a server. Application settings, which are a combination of default phone settings and end user settings, determine whether to prompt the user, start the MIDlet without prompting, or not start the MIDlet during the use of another MIDlet. The MIDP push architecture enables developers to leverage the event-driven capabilities of devices and carrier networks, and easily include alerts, messaging and broadcasts using a standard approach in MIDP applications.
* Ability to dynamically deploy and update applications over-the-air (OTA). OTA provisioning, previously supported only as a recommended practice, is now required as part of the MIDP 2.0 specification. The MIDP specification defines how MIDlet suites are discovered, installed, updated and removed on mobile information devices. MIDP also enables a service provider to identify which MIDlet suites will work on a given device, and obtain status reports from the device following installation, updates or removal.
* A robust end-to-end security model, built on open standards, that protects the network, applications and mobile information devices. MIDP 2.0 supports HTTPS and leverages existing standards such as SSL and WTLS to enable the transmission of encrypted data.
* Several enhancements to screens and items...
